It must be hung on the spring or it got turned in too tight at some point and the o-ring is mashed and that may be gripping it. Be careful as there is a spring, a tiny o-ring and a tiny flat washer that are part of the assembly.

The MX is just there to make the most power it physically can. It'll be thirsty but will lift the front easily. As mentioned, the suspension and sprocket setup make a big difference. The biggest drawback to the Mikuni is that the fuel mileage isn't great and the jetting seems to only work for a relatively narrow altitude and temp range. You should be about 1-1.5 turns out on the idle adjustment and it should start and idle fine.
