The Cloisters is the branch of the Met devoted to medieval art and architecture, and I recently had the chance to spend some time there with Peter Barnet, the curator in charge of its collections. The incredible works of art and tranquil gardens make The Cloisters the ideal escape from both the summer heat and the whirl of modern life.Eventually, Barnard’s need for money caused him to sell his collection to John D. Rockefeller, Jr. in 1925. In 1930, Rockefeller decided to build the Cloisters for the Metropolitan Museum of Art at an elevated but isolated location in Fort Tryon Park.
