Measure the resistance across the 3 white wires going to the stator. Value should be 0.11 - 0.17 ohm (1-ohm scale). Start the bike and measure the voltage on across the same white wires and it should be 54V or more (250v scale). Again with starter cable removed: 1. On fuel pump side of the harness still plugged in, push red meter probe into connector to touch pin with black/yellow wire, black meter lead to touch green pin. 2. Now I keep it at my parent's till spring comes. I just ride from time to time too keep it oiled. But the more I ride and tinker around, the more issues worth asking I find. So, first of all I noticed that when I open the throttle from idle, a knocking sound comes from the engine.Measure the pickup coil peak voltage: Remove the ignitor coupler. Connect the peak voltage tester with the + probe to the blue/white lead wire and the - probe to the green lead wire. Turn the ignition on, pull the clutch and crank the engine for a few seconds. peak voltage should be more than 1.5 volts.Check for oil around the spark plug cavity and then explore this further. On the 1500, the service manul says a special tool is need to pull the spark plug tubes, but you can fashion a tool out of the rear axle nut and unscrew the tube. I'd bet the 800 is similar. Vacuum petcocks suck. To get fuel into the oil gas has to get past the petcock. The petcock can leak 2 ways: not properly shutting off or having a diaphram issue and leaking fuel into the manifold thru the vacuum hose. "Best" fix is an earlier non-vacuum off-on-reserve petcock. If it binds, you could be interfering with the clutch action, and could pull the hose from it's fittings, creating a leak, and no clutch action/shifting.
